Patanjali’s yoga sutras, a collection of 196 Sanskrit aphorisms, synthesizing knowledge from much older traditions on the theory and practice of yoga, were compiled between 500 BCE and 400 CE by the sage Patanjali in India. The most translated ancient Indian text in the medieval era, from the 12th to the 19th century, for nearly 700 years, it was relegated to oblivion. Fortunately, in the late 19th century, it was revived by Swami Vivekananda, the Theosophical society, and others. Patanjali’s yoga sutras have been translated into nearly forty Indian languages, and old Javanese and Arabic.
